Developing Indiana OT

Shedding a little light on the verbal commitments thus far for the Class of 2017

WhoJake McKenzie

High School: Indianapolis Heritage Christian

Current Height/Weight: 6-4 270

Current Position: OT

Other Offers: Indiana State

Analysis: When he was first hired at Ball State, OL Coach Kyle DeVan promised that the Cardinals would recruit “big athletes” for the offensive line moving forward. Guys that may need to bulk up, but have the ability to move, run and pull. DeVan hit the nail on the head with under-the-radar prospect McKenzie. At 6-4 270, he is still growing into his frame, but he has long arms and the ability to get out and move. He has quick feet that allow him to excel in pass pro while also getting out to block on quick screens. He can pull and he can get to the second level quickly. McKenzie is tough and will play to the whistle every time. He hustles and will continue to push downfield as the play continues. His arm length pair well with his quickness to provide a solid punch to ward off pass rushers. McKenzie, you can see on film, enjoys contact and seeks out defenders to maul when on the move.

Outlook: McKenzie will likely redshirt his first year so that he can bulk up and continue to learn the position for the collegiate level, but he has a high ceiling with his build and athleticism. Look for McKenzie to push for playing time in year 2 with the program at the tackle spot.
