Versatile D-Lineman Has Upside

A look at the 27 players added to the Ball State roster on Signing Day 2017

Who: Zach Haynes

Current Height/Weight: 6-3 260

Current Position: DE/DT

Other Offers: Appalachian State, Army West Point, Eastern Michigan, Navy, Southeast Missouri State, Southern Illinois, Wofford

Analysis: Haynes is an intriguing prospect that brings a nice skill set and versatility to the Ball State defense. In high school, Haynes was a stand up DE that excelled at stuffing the run and rushing the passer both. What stands out immediately with Haynes is his athleticism which he showed regularly as a stud TE. On defense, Haynes is big and strong and excels at the point of attack where he is a run stuffer. He also is fast and agile enough to play on the edge and rush the QB efficiently. In college, we project Haynes to be a guy that will play regularly as a 3-tech DT where he will be able to use his speed to wreak havoc in the backfield against the run. He will also be able to play some at DE in jumbo packages and slide inside to Nose in passing situation where he can add to the pass rush attack.

Outlook: We really like Haynes on film, while he will not be in the position he was in high school, we do see him as a solid DT that can play multiple positions and do different things for Defensive Coordinator David Elson. Haynes is big and strong and freakishly athletic, he will surely get bigger as well and should play in the 275-280 area where he will still be able to maintain his athleticism while getting even stronger in the trenches.
