What We Saw: The 3 starters and top reserve from the Ball State linebacker group are all gone, so seeing what the new group of LBs can do was one of the biggest takeaways of the spring. Proposed starter at MIKE will be Jacob White, who looked solid and athletic in his role. Speaking of athletic, both OLBs are very good looking athletes that should step up and take over their roles. Jaylin Thomas, who redshirted as a freshman last season, is set to take one spot. Thomas is still learning his role, but is very fast and strong. Also starting is returning reserve, who moves into the starting 3 in Damon Singleton. The R-Jr is the biggest of the LBs at 6-3 237 and has shown a great deal of upside in the past two seasons in Muncie. Getting a true read on the group was tough though as two players who will contribute in Jeremiah Jackson and Brandon Martin both sat out with injuries.
Projected Depth Chart: White starts at MIKE while Thomas and Singleton will surely start on the edge. After that is anyone’s guess but we assume that Martin, Jackson and A.J. Jaffal will see the most snaps.
What Happens When The New Class Arrives: Knowing that there was so much attrition to the group, the staff signed 4 LBs and all four could possibly see time. Highly touted athlete Michael Robinson seems likely to get snaps. After that, David Rueth and Jimmy Daw will fight for playing time while Malcolm Lee will redshirt while he puts on necessary size.
