Ball State Class of '08: Dan Manick continues to highlight each player in the class of 2008 and doing a brief scouting report on each of the 24 players in the class (21 new players signed and 3 greyshirts). Today we have the eleventh of those 24 installments.

Dan Manick, 6-4 265 DE, Dyer, IN (Lake Central)

What he brings: Size, run stoppin. Boy oh boy is Dan Manick a beast. I can say that what I have seen of Dan is that he is BIG, but also very quick for his size, he already boasts major college size @ 265 for a DE. The question is, will he stay at that position or continue to put on weight and move inside? Dan certainly has the skills to stuff the run at the DE position, he can take on any offensive lineman and hold his own in this regard. He has good down the line speed to stretch out a running play and has a quick get off to position himself to make a play. He also looks as though he will be able to make a lot of plays in the back field.

Areas of improvement: Strength and pass rush skills. Dan is big and strong for a freshman coming in, but he needs to continue to push his level of strength up, this will ensure his ability to stuff the run at this level. This will be even more imperative if Dan transitions into a DT with added size. In order for Dan to stay at DE, he will have to develop better pass rush skills. He is big and should be able to bull rush, but will he be able to add the quick feet moves needed to effectively get to the QB with regularity. grade: I really like Dan Manick down the line. I think he will contribute early thanks to his size. But I think if he can add some pass rush skills to his run stuffing capabilities, then Dan will not only be a future starter for the Cardinals but a possible star in the MAC.
