Ball State Class of '08: Joshua Smith

BallStateInsider.com continues to highlight each player in the class of 2008 and doing a brief scouting report on each of the 23 players in the class (21 new players signed and 2 greyshirts). Today we have the eighteenth of those 23 installments.

Joshua Smith, 6-2 190 S, Cincinnati (Withrow)

What he brings: Skill and ability. Joshua Smith is not only a very good athlete, but also a very good football player. The thing that sticks out most when watching film of Smith is his play making ability. He not only tallied 10 career INTs in high school, but he also made a ton of plays by making the big tackle or the big hit. Smith isn't just a safety that will be at home in center field for the Cardinals, but he also brings the heat when attacking the run and has the ability to make WRs fearful of crossing the middle against him.

Areas of improvement: Strength and recognition. First off, Joshua Smith is probably not 190, but he is within a summer camp of being there. At 190, he will have to still add another 5 to 10 lbs of strength in order the not wear down when attacking the run. Also, as has been stated before, Smith will have to work vigorously on his run vs. pass recognition in order to contribute.

BallStateInsider.com grade: I could see Smith playing as a freshman, although he was largely overlooked by recruiting services, he definitely is one of the top athletes in the class of 2008. Look for Smith the have a very good career in Cardinal Red.
