Ball State close to hiring DC & OL coaches

It appears that Stan Parrish has come two steps closer to completing his coaching staff for the upcoming season at Ball State, and just in time for a big recruiting weekend.

Ball State Head Coach Stan Parrish reportedly has picked up two more coaches to fill vacancies after staff changes brought about by now San Diego State head Coach Brady Hoke's depature.

We now can assume that 50% of the staff is complete as it appears the Cardinals are set to hire long time NFL assistant and former D1 Head Coach Doug Graber as their defensive coordinator as well as hiring North Dakota State offensive coordinator/O-Line coach Pat Perles as their new Offensive Line coach.

All this comes after the announcement that 3 staff memebers (WR Coach and Recruiting Coordinator Jeff Hecklinski, Guards and Centers coach Darrell Funk and Defensive Coordinator/LBs coach Mark Smith) all left for San Diego with Hoke. Also, it appears that Strength and Conditioning Coach Aaron Wellman will join Hoke's staff.

It also appears that of the staff in Muncie last season, Parrish has chosen to retain three assistants in RB's Coach Eddie Faulkner (one of the midwest's best and brightest, up and coming assistants), OT & TE John Powers (who will become the new recruiting coordinator) and Defensive Line coach Phil Burnett.

Reports surfaced last night about Graber's potential hire after the press conference announcing Nate Davis' departure for the NFL Draft. The Star Press published a reports saying that Graber will be the man and Parrish reiterated the point on WLBC FM (104.1) in an interview at halftime of the Ball State Men's basketball game versus Northern Illinois when Parrish told Morrie Manies that the deal was not completely done, but Graber was on his way to Muncie today.

Graber comes with a long and storied background as a coach. He started his career at Ball State in the 1970's under Head Coach Dave McClain, then following him to Wisconsin where he took over as Defensive Coordinator.

Graber next served a stint as DB coach for the Kansas City Chiefs followed by 3 seasons (87-89) as the Tampa Bay Bucs defensive coordinator. Graber then moved on to serve 6 seasons as head coach for Rutgers where he compiled a 29-36-1 record and also had Parrish as his offensive coordinator on his staff. After Rutgers, Graber served stints as DB coach for the New York Jets and also as Head Coach for the Frankfurt Galaxy in the now defunct NFL Europe League.

Perles' hiring is being reported by the Bison Media Blog. Perles will come from North Dakota State where he served 6 seasons as the Bison's Offensive Coordinator/O-Line coach. During his tenure he helped the Bison to victories over FCS teams including Ball State. Perles, who is son of former Michigan State Head Coach George Perles, has also served tenures as Defensive Line coach at Toledo (89-91), Defensive Assistant for the Los Angeles Rams (92-93), as well as offensive line coache for three CFL teams (Hamilton, Winnipeg and Saskatchewan.

Stay tuned to as we keep you up to date on the complete of Coach Parrish's staff.
