Ball State: Signing Day thoughts

With Signing Day (aka - Christmas in Feburary for me) finally here, I figured it was a good time to take a look at what might lay ahead for the recruiting class of 2009 for Ball State.

It's finally here! Signing Day 2009!

Ball State is expected to announce the names of at least 24 young men to become part of the Cardinal football program and Ball State University as student athletes. With the excitement of the day still being eagerly anticipated as we wait for official announcements, I figured it was a good time to look at what we might see today and moving forward.

To recap, we already know that Ball State will sign 21 fresh faces today coupled with the additions of already enrolled athletes Aaron Mershman and Seth White, so who else might be out there and what other moves are there to be made?

One name we know for sure that might be added to the list today is that of Lafayette, FL DB Sergio Perez. Perez, who visited Ball State a few weeks ago, had narrowed his choices down to the Cardinals and Troy (where he visited last weekend). By what I am hearing and reading on various reports from Troy, Perez is set to be a Cardinal as part of the Class of 2009.

Another piece of information floating around is that OLB/DE Alex Andrus of Coopersville, MI, will, in fact, be signed as a greyshirt. This is mainly due to the fact that Andrus is still recovering from knee surgery after injuring his leg during his senior campaign. The move will mean more rehad time for Alex without losing eligibility as well as freeing up one more spot for the Cardinals this year if they so choose.

Other news and notes

We were not able to highlight the news of the last Cardinal to verbal in TE/H-back Zane Fakes of Plainfield, IN. Fakes, who committed after receiving an offer from the Cardinals on a visit here last weekend, is a 6-3 235 athlete who ran for over 2,200 yards for the Class 4A Quakers.

As announced yesterday in the Los Angeles Times and by our own Doug Schrader, Delvon Purvis, a 5-11 185 athlete from LA Jordan, is expect to visit Muncie after signing day and might eventually be a memeber of this class. Purvis, who can project at WR, RB or even S, is a solid athlete and would be a welcome addition to the Cardinals.

So what is left?

With 24 total kids being announced today, one might think the Cardinals are completely done for 2009. But not so fast, of those 24 kids, only 21 will effectively count for this year. With Mershman and White coming in early, they count towards last season. Andrus, who will likely greyshirt, would then count towards 2010. So, what to do with the remaining 4 open slots? Aside from Purvis, I am really at a loss for names right now, but guaranteed, when the smoke clears from today, there will be kids out there with talent, to choose from. Stay tuned!
