Houston Scores On Opening Night

TaShawn Thomas closed the July period with a big time flurry at the AAU Nationals. A late blooming big man, Thomas won a lot of followers but on Thursday, Houston won his commitment.

Killen (Tex.) High's best player, 6-foot-8 power forward TaShawn Thomas flew off the board on the first night.

James Dickey is one-for-one during this period. The Houston coach left his first home visit with good news. Dickey visited with Thomas and his family and locked down the commitment. "James Dickey is a helluva guy," Ken Thomas told Scout.com. "I'm impressed with the whole coaching staff."

Alabama and Temple were about to come strong but the Cougars closed it down quickly. "The University of Houston just let our home and my son committed to Houston. Everyone around here is excited. It's a pressure release off our back."

The Cougars have recruited well since Dickey arrived and the late blooming, lengthy Thomas is set to be a fixture in the frontcourt for the next four seasons. Thomas and his father were impressed with what the future holds.

"I believe it was the recruiting class that they have coming in. They aren't big name guys but there's some good players in there and the class was impressive to him and so was the coaching staff. It was a family atmosphere."
