Upshaw Drawing Heavy Interest

Robert Upshaw, the top center in the west for 2012, has had plenty of college coaches checking him out in the last couple weeks...

Robert Upshaw, 6-11 JR C Fresno (Calif.) San Joaquin Memorial, is the top prospect at his position in the West Coast class of 2012 and one of the better post prospects in the country. Upshaw has improved dramatically in the last year and he's got a very good frame. He's got very big feet and it's possible that he's still growing. He's moving much better than he did a year ago and he's developed a nice stroke out to 16-18 feet.

I spoke with Upshaw recently and he said he's hearing from a number of schools.

"St. Mary's, LSU, Utah, UCLA, Texas, Fresno State, Arizona State and Arizona have all been out to my school in the past couple weeks," said Upshaw. "All those schools have offered, but I'm hearing from a lot of other schools including Illinois, Florida State and Harvard, among others."

I asked Upshaw if any school stands out for him at this time.

"No, I'm really open to everyone that has interest in me," said Upshaw. "I don't have any favorites."

I asked Upshaw about the factors that will be important to him when he chooses a school.

"Everything from academics to the basketball," said Upshaw. "I want to find something that fits me. The location doesn't matter at all. I just want to go to the best place for me, no matter what part of the country."

Upshaw said he has been to the campuses of USC and UCLA when he's been in L.A. for tournaments, but said he won't take any unofficial visits for awhile.

"I'm going to wait until after my season before I start taking unofficial visits," said Upshaw.

Upshaw doesn't plan on making an early decision.

"I think I will wait until the spring of my senior year to pick a school," said Upshaw.
