The Inside Word

'Tis the transfer season…some inside word about where some big recruits are leaning… and some rumors coming out of the state of Washington...

Here are some rumors and bits of news we've heard in the last week.

The 6-10 center, Kevin Field, from Tacoma (Wash.) Wilson, is reportedly close to commiting to Washington. Apparently his two big leaders are Washington and Oregon State, and Washington has the edge and could get a commitment before the end of the summer.

Staying in the state of Washington, Gonzaga is off to a great start in this recruiting season with a commitment from Sean Mallon and now we're hearing that they're also doing well with San Diego SG/SF Derek Stockalper. There will no doubt be a few Pac-10 schools looking at Stockalper as well, but the days of the lower Pac-10 schools automatically beating Gonzaga for recruits are long gone.

Also, Washington St. is taking a look at fifth year senior, 6-2 shooting guard Steve Moore from Compton Dominguez. Northridge and San Jose St. have also been mentioned as possible destinations for the athletic scorer, but there are questions about his academic status.

USC shooting guard Nate Hair will not be back with the Trojans next year. Hair will stay in school, but he won't be playing basketball.

Bryant Markson, the 6-6 SF from Monrovia, is out for the summer with an injury to his ACL.

Tis the Season to Transfer:

There were many rumors that ex-Compton Dominguez head coach Russell Otis could be headed to Lynwood High School, but it now appears it won't happen. With the departure of Otis from Dominguez, there are rumors about several players leaving the powerhouse program. Samir Hernandez, a 6-7 JR power forward, is apparently transferring from Dominguez to Serra. Bobby Jones has been mentioned as a possibility to transfer to Long Beach Poly (although this rumor has been around for a while and nothing has happened yet), and Darius Sanders is apparently already gone to Compton Centennial.

Compton Centennial might be getting another big-named senior-to-be in 6-8 power forward Brian Freeny who, the word is, will come to Southern California to play at Centennial from Mesquite (Ariz.) High.

Always Mater Dei Transfer News:

Lance Soderberg, 6-7 PF, has reportedly decided to leave Corona Centennial and return to Mater Dei, where he spent his freshman and sophomore years. Also, 6-2 junior-to-be shooting guard Daryl Strawberry, Jr. is transferring to Mater Dei from Pasadena (Calif.) Blair. The rumor persists, as it has for quite a while, that 6-5 junior-to-be SF Trayvon Williams will transfer to Mater Dei, but his grades could be holding it up.
