Gaters Have Frontline Size
Friday night at the AAU practice of the Greensboro Gaters, we got our first look at 2004 North Carolina State commitment Cedric Simmons. While we didn't see him play in a game setting, it was easy to see why the Pack offered early.
Simmons is a legit 6-9 at this point with size 16 boots. The kid has the body of a Stromile Swift and dunking with athleticism won't be a problem. He'll anchor an impressive frontline for the Gaters.
Joining Simmons upfront is Garner forward James Mays. The senior to be continues to bulk up and athleticism was never a problem for him either.
Also in the frontline rotation will be Simon Harris (2004), Sam Faulk (2004) and Tavoris Watts (2004). The athletic Jason Thompson will help man the small forward role. High school teammate Larry Smith will come off the bench in relief of Thompson.
The backcourt will be anchored by JamesOn Curry, a 2004 North Carolina commitment. Curry was not in attendance at Friday's practice but he'll be in the starting lineup. Guards Kenny Hunt, Mack Montgomery and Jaron Goodson were at the practice as well.
Montgomery is a good looking student-athlete with a big time GPA. He's got great touch on his jumper, especially from medium-range. He's at least a mid-major type prospect and we'll be eager to see him in a game situation. Hunt, a 5-10 guard from Alta Vista in Virginia, also has a reliable touch with his jumper.
In addition to Curry, Takeo Siddle and Marcus Harrison were not in attendance.
Shelton's team takes the floor for the first time this weekend in Augusta, Ga. They'll also play in Myrtle Beach this month.
