Golden Bears Get First Visit
Eric Vierneisel is a skilled small forward who plays with the Illinois Warriors AAU team and averaged 16 points a game as a junior for Jacobs.
His high school team finished 21-7 and lost in the regionals. For his efforts, Vierneisel was named the Daily Herald, Elgin Courier and Algonquin Courier Player of the Year. Not bad.
A natural small forward, Vierneisel, like many high school prospects, saw active duty inside because of his height. "For the most part of the season I was inside. In the last four games our coach switched things up and I was almost playing point guard. Our scoring average went up but we got upset in the regional championship game."
College coaches were quick to lock onto him. California came to watch him a few times. Notre Dame, Northern Illinois and Marquette also were in the stands. Just the other day he talked with Stanford and Georgia Tech.
Vierneisel's first official visit will be to California. Ben Braun, the head coach at Cal, has deep roots in the Midwest and he's using those ties to tug at Vierneisel. "They've been there from the beginning an I've given the most attention to them but it's still open right now. Coach Braun went to New Trier and they've always been recruiting me here."
California will host him on his first official visit the weekend of April 18.
