Some were surprised when Smith-Rivera committed to Xavier over offers from schools such as Indiana, Purdue, Louisville, and Ohio State. He cited a relationship with the staff as the reason why, but now he is back on the market according to his mother Kelana Rivera.
"We have been talking things over as a family, and D'Vauntes has decided to de-commit from Xavier," said Rivera. "We talked it over with them tonight and made it official."
She continued, "They are still very much the team to beat. We have a great relationship with Coach (Travis) Steele and Coach (Chris) Mack, and they have a leg up on everybody else."
Many schools were involved in this recruitment before the commitment to Xavier, but the Riveras are not going to simply limit the recruitment to those schools now that they are back open.
"We are not going to close the doors on any one," said Rivera. "He didn't have an opportunity to go through the process and take official visits, and we are going to listen to all schools."
Currently Smith-Rivera is rated as the No. 22 prospect in the nation. While Xavier is still involved heavily, look for the other schools in the Midwest to be heavily involved.
