City of Palms: Breakout Performers

Pittsburgh signee Malcolm Gilbert had a breakout weekend at the City of Palms Classic, as did 2014 prospect and St. Patrick big man Dakari Johnson.

Quick Take: Although we only took in one game, Gilbert, a Pittsburgh signee, did enough on the defensive end to warrant being in this space. The near 7-footer was up against a talented St. Mark's frontline and he blocked at least a half dozen shots and altered a number of others. Offensively, Gilbert is still raw and must add some post moves, but he has great timing, is absolutely huge and is turning into a dominant defensive prospect.

Quick Take: James has only been playing organized basketball for a little over a year and that's a scary thought. Every time out he seems to be a little bit better. Although he was in foul trouble for both of the games we saw him, it was easy to notice the amount of talent in his 6-foot-10, 280-pound frame. He has a great set of hands, has developed scoring moves on the block and is willing to fight for rebounds. He's a legit high major prospect and future member of's 2012 top 100.

Quick Take: We caught Lewis over the summer and he looked much improved this past week at the City of Palms Classic. At 6-foot-3, Lewis is a talented guard that can really score and pass. He has a quick trigger, range to the three-point stripe, as well as a nice mid-range game. His passing stuck out as well. He found teammates in transition and cutting to the basket in the half court offense. Just a sophomore, Lewis still has plenty of time to develop, but at this point he has the look of a high major prospect.

Quick Take: A talented shooting guard prospect, Reinhardt had a pretty solid tournament, while leading Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei to a third place finish at the City of Palms. Reinhardt showed good range on his jump shot and consistently knocked down deep jumpers, while also mixing in one dribble pull-ups. While Xavier Johnson played well, Reinhardt was just important to Mater Dei's run through the Classic in Fort Myers.

Quick Take: The future is bright for Johnson. A 6-foot-9, 220-pound post prospect, Johnson is just scratching the surface. He started the event coming off the bench, but by the end of it was a major factor for the Celtics and started the final few games. He finished well around the basket, showed a good set of hands and didn't force things. Gilchrist and Gordon were the primary performers for St. Pat's, but Johnson certainly played a big role in their run to the City of Palms title.
