Chandler Makes First Commitment Of New Year

Michael Chandler is the first basketball prospect to make his college choice of the New Year. Chandler has plans to play in Conference USA.

Michael Chandler's recruitment has been a bit of a roller coaster.

A top 100 prospect out of Indianapolis (Ind.) Lawrence North, Chandler originally committed to Louisville as a sophomore. Then in the spring he opened up his recruitment before committing to Xavier in October.

On signing day Chandler, a 6-foot-11, 235-pound post prospect, had cold feet and opted to open up his recruitment again.

This past weekend, while on an official visit to UCF, Chandler made another verbal commitment.

"Yes its true!," Chandler sent in an email. "This is my final decision!"

"I know I have said this before, but I will sign with UCF and this is by far the best decision for me," the four-star prospect added.

Chandler said Donnie Jones and Central Florida's coaching staff played a major role in his decision.

"What sold me was coach Jones," Chandler said. "I've built a great relationship with him and with the teammates, and my mom has built a great relationship with coach Jones also."

Chandler, who had also received recent interest from Indiana, St. John's, Oregon, Connecticut and Kentucky, said his visit to UCF's Orlando campus sold him on the program.

"I loved the program and how it will better me as a player and a person and [I like] the fact that he has put good big men into the NBA," he said. "Also the campus was really beautiful and the weather really warm too.'

Chandler is ranked No. 84 overall in the 2011 class.
