Gates Considers Options

Joe Gates, one of the top post prospects in California, is looking at several schools in the west...

Joe Gates, 6-9 JR PF Arcata (Calif.) High, told us recently that he's hearing from Santa Clara, San Jose St., Colorado St., Wyoming, Pacific, Washington and Loyola, among others.

Gates has taken unofficial visits to Santa Clara and San Jose St. He told us that he has yet to set up any official visits with schools.

We asked for his thought process on choosing a school. "I'm looking for a good school, where I can get a good education -- possibly in enginerring," said Gates.

He went on to say, "I'm leaning towards the Bay Area. My family is there, and I know and like the area."

Playing time is somewhat of an issue for Gates. "I'd want to go where I can get some playing time. But I also want to play against good competition. So it's a matter of balancing those two."

Gates said he's received a few calls from Washington and Loyola, along with a lot of contact from San Jose St., Santa Clara and Pacific. He said he's been emailing with Santa Clara as well.

Gates doesn't expect to make a decision any time soon. "I want to wait and look at my options. I could sign in the fall or maybe wait until spring."

Gates told us that he scored 1240 on the SAT.
