Since getting the job at Central Florida, Jones and his staff have done a terrific job reeling in talent. Three weeks ago they reeled in four-star prospect Michael Chandler and now they've secured 2012 wing prospect Shawn Smith.
"I picked Central Florida because it was the right choice," Smith told Scout.com. "I picked UCF because of coach Jones. I like all of the other coaches, but coach Jones just really stood out to me. He's a really good coach."
"They started recruiting me two years ago," he said. "Ever since they started recruiting me it was always coach Jones. I could just tell he really wanted me. It's not just how I'm doing on the court he wants to know other things."
Smith, who just left Arlington Country Day for Jacksonville (Fla.) Providence, claimed scholarship offers from South Carolina, Mississippi, West Virginia, Kansas, State, Missouri, Florida, Florida State and Cincinnati.
He first cited his relationship with Jones for picking Central Florida. But Smith also pointed out that he doesn't mind going to a non big six conference program, because he thinks they'll be able to compete with anyone.
"If I go to UCF we cant start up a program and make it big and turn it into a Miami or Florida," the 6-foot-4 guard said.
"I've been hearing all over the internet that they could be moving to the Big East," he added. "I don't really care about the conference they are in, if you can play you can play."
Smith is Central Florida's first commitment in the 2012 class.
