Johnson Weighing His Options

Xavier Johnson, one of the elite talents in the west for 2012, has multiple offers from high major programs...

Xavier Johnson, 6-6 JR SF/PF Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei, is one of the elite prospects in the West Coast class of 2012. An athletic lefty, Johnson has the ability knock down threes or post up smaller players in the paint. Johnson's versatility is one reason he's such an intriguing prospect. He has the quickness to defend on the perimeter, but also the strength and size to play inside. It's possible he will eventually grow into a straight four man but, for now, I'm projecting Johnson as a potential SF/PF at the next level.

I spoke with Johnson recently and asked him about the schools that are recruiting him.

"The main ones have been USC, UCLA, Cal, UNLV, Gonzaga, Stanford, Utah and also Georgetown a little bit," said Johnson.

When asked which schools have offered, Johnson replied, "USC, UCLA, Cal, UNLV, Stanford and Utah."

I asked Johnson if he has some criteria in mind for picking a school.

"I actually haven't really thought about it a lot yet," said Johnson. "A big factor will be which school shows the most interest. The location doesn't really matter – I will go anywhere. Early playing time is important though. I'd like to come in and play right away. I want to be a catalyst for the team."

Johnson said he doesn't really have a leader at the moment.

"I don't really have a leader," said Johnson. "They're all about the same right now. I need to get a little deeper into the process."

Johnson has taken unofficial visits to USC, UCLA and UNLV. I asked him if he has any other visits planned.

"I know I want to visit Utah," said Johnson. "I can always go to USC or UCLA whenever I want. I definitely want to visit UNLV again. And I'm trying to see what Gonzaga, Cal and Georgetown are all about."

Johnson said he's not sure when he might make a decision.

"I don't really have a time frame in mind," said Johnson.
