Inside Word

The site's most popular feature returns. Here's some of the latest scuttlebutt we've heard about recruiting on the west coast...

Now that we've started to get settled in our new location, we've decided to resume our Inside Word feature. Here are a few rumors and bits of news we've heard lately.

Stanford recently hosted top sophs Harrison Schaen and David Padgett for an unofficial visit. Schaen, 6-8 PF Santa Ana (CA) Mater Dei, and Padgett, 6-10 C Reno (NV) High, were both offered by the Cardinal. While there probably won't be any imminent decisions, both players are reportedly very high on Stanford. In fact, we've heard that if he had to make a decision today, Schaen would choose the Cardinal. Early word on Padgett is that he favors Stanford and UCLA.

Stanford is also supposedly very interested in Omar Wilkes, 6-2 SO SG Los Angeles (CA) Loyola, and Richard Cobbs, 6-5 SO SG/SF, Moreno Valley (CA) Canyon Springs. No word yet on how soon an offer might be coming for them.

A source close to the NBA tells us that the Washington Wizards are seriously considering using their #1 pick on Tyson Chandler. Chandler apparently wowed the Wizards in a recent workout and some off the court issues with a few of the other top candidates may have moved Chandler to the top of the list. Obviously, this is the time of year when misinformation (and misdirection) is routinely disseminated by the clubs with the top picks, but this item sounds like it could be legit. There's no question Chandler has as much upside as anyone in the draft. The $64,000 (make that $64 million) question is does he have the burning desire of a Garnett, Bryant or Iverson? Even people who are very close to Tyson don't know the answer to that question. We've seen Tyson play an awful lot in the last four years and we're up in the air on that one as well.

Transfer has become a way of life in the SoCal high school basketball scene, so it's no surprise that there have already been a few (with more to come, no doubt). 6-7 football/basketball standout Ryan O'Hara has left Monrovia for Muir, 6-7 JR PF James Matthewshas apparently left Verbum Dei for Fremont and it sounds like 6-4 JR PF Darius Sanders is leaving Dominguez for Compton Centennial. Dominguez could also lose 6-7 JR SF Bobby Jones to Long Beach Poly, although we've heard mixed signals on that one.
