According to Creedmoor (N.C.) Christian Faith Center Academy coach Ro Russell, Kevin Thomas gave Texas and the Longhorns a verbal commitment Thursday morning, becoming the fourth Canadian to head to Texas in recent years.
What's the connection?
"Coach Barnes has been up to Canada several times going back to when he was recruiting Theo Davis," Russell told Scout.com. "He's been up there several times. People have gotten to know his name."
Texas assistant coach Rodney Terry has also made it a point to target that area and Russell's high school and AAU program.
"Rodney Terry has done a great job of working it and getting on the grind and following the guys at the events and building relationships with them," Russell added.
"They recruited him the hardest," he said. "The head coach was up to see him. Two of the assistants went to see him. He had a great visit and he met with Todd Wright the strength and conditioning guy. His family went and they were very impressed with the program."
Thomas, a 6-foot-7, 215-pound power forward, also had AAU teammates and current Texas signee Myck Kabongo tugging at him to head to Austin (Tex.).
"Myck has been recruiting Kevin big time since he signed and was trying to get him to come with him," Russell said.
Thomas joins a recruiting class that already ranks No. 6 nationally. To go with Kabongo, Thomas also joins four-star prospects Jonathan Holmes, Julien Lewis and Shledon McClellan to make up their 2011 class.
