Willis picks Big 10 school

Purdue locked down another underclassman on Saturday. This time they moved into the state of Kentucky to pick up Derek Willis.

Purdue doesn't waste much time on the recruiting trail.

Matt Painter and company already have three committed for the 2012 class and on Saturday they picked up their fourth member of the 2013 class.

Derek Willis, a 6-foot-9 slender power forward out of Mt. Washington (Ky.) Bullitt East, committed to Painter and his program during an unofficial visit Saturday afternoon.

"Yes he committed today around 1:30," Willis' father -- Del -- confirmed to Scout.com.

During his sophomore season, Willis drew a number of college coaches to his games, including Purdue, Kentucky, Indiana and Louisville. Purdue was the first to offer.

"The academic and basketball setting was perfect for Derek and coach Painter is dedicated to Purdue and will be even after Derek graduates," the elder Willis said. "Coach Painter and his staff are a class act."

Willis joins an impressive 2013 group that also includes four-star Bryson Scott, as well as Kendall Stephens and Basil Smotherman.

Willis averaged just over 13 points and nearly nine boards per game during his sophomore campaign.
