Gibbs commits to Texas

Sterling Gibbs started the day in Texas. After making it home to New Jersey, he sat down with his family and made his college decision.

Monday afternoon Sterling Gibbs thought he would wait out the recruiting process.

By Monday evening the top available point guard in the 2011 class opted to make his college choice.

"I committed to Texas," Gibbs, standout at West Orange (N.J.) Seton Hall Prep, told Scout.com.

Gibbs, who had originally signed with Maryland, took an official visit to Texas this past weekend. He returned from Austin (Tex.) Monday morning.

The 6-foot guard had interest from a variety of schools including UCLA, Connecticut, Louisville, Providence and Seton Hall.

Ultimately it was Gibbs' relationship with Rob Lanier, Rick Barnes and a future teammate that led to him picking the Longhorns.

"I have a really good relationship with Rob Lanier," Gibbs said. "I've known him for a couple years, since I was in middle school. I was able to develop a relationship with coach Barnes too.

"Not many people know this but I'm really close to Myck Kabongo," he added. "I know what Myck's goals are and he knows what my goals are."

Gibbs joins a class that also consists of Kabongo, Jonathan Holmes, Julien Lewis, Sheldon McClellan and Kevin Thomas.
