Clemson scores 2013 Rooks

Patrick Rooks wanted to stay close to home. So the talented guard out of North Carolina thought back to his childhood elementary days when contemplating his college choice.

Patrick Rooks fulfilled a long time dream.

Late Monday night, Rooks, a 6-foot-3 guard out of Charlotte (N.C.) Christian, gave Brad Brownell the nod just a day after a visit to the Clemson campus.

"That's been my number one school since eighth or ninth grade," Rooks told "The visit yesterday really put the nail on the head."

Rooks also entertained interest from Charlotte, Xavier, Virginia, Virginia Tech and North Carolina State. Ultimately it was his familiarity with the program that won out.

"I love the school," the 6-foot-3 guard said. "I love the staff. I love the community."

"Me going to a school around there for elementary [school], that was big," he added. "I used to get all the announcements over the intercom saying 'come to this game and support the Tigers.' I was just loving that. I never thought I'd see the day that I would become a Tiger."

Rooks, a three-star prospect, is Clemson's first verbal commitment for the 2013 class.
