On Sunday afternoon at the Kingwood Classic, Russell Robinson guided the New York Gauchos to the championship by virtue of an 85-57 win over Memphis YOMCA.
Robinson torched Memphis for 14 first half points, including four 3-pointers. The game got away from Memphis very early and it was all due to Robinson's stellar play. The shooting guard was the unofficial MVP of the event as he ended his day with 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting.
As hot as Robinson was, Memphis was that cold. They fell behind 40-22 at the half and never were really in this one. In fact, no Memphis player reached double-digit points. Charles Hampton and Jerrell Houston were the high-scorers for Memphis with 9 points each. Guard Andre Allen had been posting big numbers all weekend long, but was held to 6 points on a 2-for-8 effort from the field.
To get to the championship game, the Gauchos posted a 20-point dismantling of Team Texas in the semifinals. They defeated the Arkansas Wings in the quarter finals.
Memphis had an equally challenging route to the championship. In one of the best games of the tournament, Memphis defeated the D.C. Blue Devils in the quarters before knocking out California Team Select to advance to the finals.
