McGary talks recent visits

It has been a breakout spring for Mitch McGary who is now one of the most coveted players in the nation.

It has been an impressive spring for Mitch McGary. The 6-foot-10 center from Wolfeboro (NH) Brewster Academy absolutely exploded during the AAU circuit and is now considered one of the premier players in the country. With that he has made unofficial visits and is picking up offers.

While people always felt McGary had talent, no one really thought he would be this good this soon. With that type of move to the national stage comes a lot of attention, and so far McGary says he and his family have been able to handle it well.

"I really wasn't expecting it to happen this fast, but it happened in like a blink of an eye," said McGary. "I have been able to handle it and my parents have handled most of the phone calls. Rankings are just numbers. It is prestigious to be up there, but I know it is just a number and I have to get better."

The scholarship offers and interest have come in from coast-to-coast, schools such as UCLA, Kansas, Indiana, Purdue, Marquette, Michigan, Florida, Arizona, Texas, Cincinnati, and Duke have all at least been in touch. The most recent offer came on a visit to a Connecticut.

After the visit there was some speculation that McGary might look to go to the 2011 class, but that isn't the case.

"It was good," said McGary of his trip to UConn. "They offered me a scholarship which was good. I guess I kind of messed up and there was some confusion on what I tweeted. Connecticut said they would take me in 2011, but I am staying in 2012. There is no question I am staying in 2012, but I liked the trip and liked what I saw there."

Also earlier in May he made a visit to Kansas. The trip to KU is another one that impressed him.

"It was good out there," said McGary. "Naadir (Tharpe) is going there and Thomas Robinson is there now. They are both Brewster alumni, and being close to them it could be a good fit at Kansas and I could fit in right away. They are losing their bigs and Thomas probably goes to the NBA so I could come in and play. It was a good trip out there, but I just have to think about everything."

When it comes to potential future visits, McGary isn't sure when they will all take place, but he does intend to make a trip to Big Ten country in the near future.

"I do not know at the moment," said McGary of any future visits. "My AAU coach, Coach (Wayne) Brumm knows my visits, but I don't know yet. I do know I am going to Michigan pretty soon, probably in the next couple of weeks."

At the moment McGary is at the very beginning stages of his recruitment, but when the time comes to make a decision he does have any idea of what will push one school over the top.

"I am just looking for the school that best fits me," McGary explained. "I would like to play right away. It doesn't matter if a school is high-major or mid-major. I am just looking for a school that has great academics, a great head coach, and is a place where I have a good relationship with everybody."
