Johnson Taking His Time

Xavier Johnson has several scholarship offers, but says he doesn't anticipate making an early decision...

Xavier Johnson, 6-6 SR SF Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei, is one of the elite prospects in the west for 2012. While he started out primarily as an inside player, he has steadily added to his game over the years and he's now become an accurate shooter with three-point range. While there was some question early as to whether he'd be able to play the three in college, he's retained his quickness as he's matured and he should be able to defend on the perimeter more than adequately at the next level.

I spoke with Johnson recently and he gave me an update on the schools that have been recruiting him.

"Arizona, UCLA, San Diego State, Arizona State, Washington, USC, Virginia Tech and Georgetown have been the main ones," said Johnson.

I asked Johnson which schools have extended scholarship offers.

"Arizona, UCLA, San Diego State, Arizona State and USC," said Johnson.

When asked if he had a feel for which schools have been recruiting him the hardest, Johnson replied, "UCLA, USC and San Diego State."

Johnson said he plans on taking his time with his decision.

"I'll probably decide late in my senior year," said Johnson.

Johnson talked a little about the things he's considering as he tries to make his decision.

"I want to go to a school where they will prepare me to play the two/three at the next level," said Johnson. "I want to have good communication with my coach and a coach that will push me. I wouldn't mind staying close to home, but that's not too big of a deal."

Johnson has been to local schools UCLA and USC several times. I asked if he has any unofficial visits planned.

"I don't have any dates yet," said Johnson. "But I'd like to get to Arizona, Georgetown and Washington. I might go by the end of the summer."

Johnson said he has a 3.0 GPA.
