James makes his commitment

North Carolina landed a pledge from four-star center Joel James this week.

Rumors had been circulating that four-star center Joel James committed to the University of North Carolina, and on Sunday James confirmed that talk. According to James the decision was made a few days ago in a call to head coach Roy Williams.

"It was at one point Florida State and North Carolina," said James. "Right now it is North Carolina. I called Coach Williams a couple of days ago."

According to James the decision came to him while he was about to take a test in school.

"I was in math class and I had a math test, it just came to me," said James. "I basically did it off of a life choice. Just the atmosphere and if you graduate from North Carolina you can do big things. Obviously it is the Mecca of college basketball so that is a major attraction."

The 6-foot-10 and 260 pound product from West Palm Beach (FL) Dwyer High School said he feels he can contribute immediately for a team that needs a power presence on the interior.

"Carolina is known for fast pace running, but they have never had a post player who has played down low for a long time," explained James. "I can come in and be a power player. As you can see I can run the floor, and running that much in practice I will definitely get in shape."

James says that when he made the call to UNC, Coach Williams was very happy to receive the news.

"He was ecstatic and happy," said James. "He needed a big man and I decided to come. I guess that is how it is when every kid commits."

For James, he is already preparing for Carolina's up tempo style. According to him he has already dropped a significant amount of weight.

"I have dropped 15 pounds in two weeks just running," said James. "I just run pretty much."

By committing James becomes the third four-star prospect in the class for the Tar Heels. He joins wing J.P. Tokoto and point guard Marcus Paige.
