Harris makes the call

Five-star guard Gary Harris made his pick on the first day of the signing period. He's going to Michigan State.

Signing Day provided little drama, until Gary Harris opted to make a late-night choice.

He informed Scout.com that he would play his college basketball for Tom Izzo and Michigan State.

"I'm going to State, I just committed to Michigan State" Harris exclaimed moments after talking to Izzo.

Harris, a 6-foot-4 guard, also strongly considered Kentucky, Indiana and Purdue. He took official visits to all four schools involved.

For Harris the call to Izzo was a relief and something he looked forward to.

"I called him and pretty much just told him that I was going there," said Harris. "It was definitely a long process and it was very hard to tell the other coaches no, but it definitely feels good to have it over."

In the end the family broke down the process the last few nights, and figured out where each school fit in to what was important for Harris. After taking a close look, it was Michigan State that won out.

"Pretty much we put everything down on paper and compared all the schools based on what I wanted in a school," said Harris. "The comfort I had with the coaching staff, the players, style of play, and after looking at it Michigan State was just the best place for me."

Michigan State did have the last visit, but Harris says the timing wasn't important but the nature of the visit was.

"I don't think having the last visit put them over the top, but it helped answer any questions I had about the school, and I just felt it was the right place for me," said Harris.

Now Harris is focused on his future in East Lansing, and what he will do on the court next season.

"I am going to have to go in and fight for minutes and work hard every day," said Harris. "If I do that then I think I can get in at the two-guard."

Harris joins top 100 prospects Matt Costello and Kenny Kaminski as well as three-star prospect Denzel Valentine in the Spartans top 10 rated recruiting class.
