UTEP lands big pledge

It lasted a while, but Chris Washburn's recruitment has come to an end and he will head to Conference USA.

Coach Tim Floyd is making a big impact at UTEP, and now he has a second top 100 prospect in the fold. Coming into the signing period the Miners had a commitment from Twymond Howard, and now they have added a second in Chris Washburn.

"It is official he signed his letter," said South Grand Prairie (Tex.) High School Coach Brandon Bennett.

At 6-foot-9 and 240 pounds, Washburn is the No. 99 rated prospect and a four-star star prospect. Washburn excelled over the summer at the Great American Shootout during the month of July showing an ability to score down low to go along with having good hands and being a solid rebounder.

"We are happy to have him signed and now he officially will be a Miner," added Bennett.

One thing that UTEP had working in their favor was the presence of Washburn's older brother Julian. Julian is a freshman wing for the Miners, and now his older brother will be joining him in El Paso as part of one of the best recruiting classes in Conference USA.

UTEP now has a very impressive five man class. Along with Howard and Washburn, the Miners also have three-star forward Anthony January in the fold as well, athletic wing Dwayne Benjamin, as well as Kentucky native MeKale McKay, though McKay will not sign during the early signing period.
