No timetable for Shepard

Winston Shepard is one of the better available prospects in the country heading into the spring. Here's an update on where his recruitment stands.

With the fall signing period ending, college coaches can now shift their focus on 2012 prospects making spring decisions, and one of the better players on the board is 6-foot-6, 180-pound Henderson (Nev.) Findlay Prep forward Winston Shepard.

Outside of an official visit to New Mexico, Shepard hasn't made a lot of headway into his recruitment, and Findlay Prep assistant coach Todd Simon said his list still stands at New Mexico, San Diego State, UTEP, UNLV and Oklahoma State.

It could take some time before he's able to start taking more visits.

"I don't know that it's necessarily set in stone what he wants to do with all that yet," said Simon. "We don't have many gaps in our season so our seniors will likely take a lot of postseason visits."

In general, Shepard doesn't have any set time he'd like to make a decision, beyond the knowledge of when he'll actually be signing.

"I wouldn't necessarily say there's a timetable," said Simon. "He said he'll sign in the spring so that's really the only expectation."

Shepard's main focus has been on basketball and not recruiting, which has been one of the reasons he's taken his time.

"I think he ran out of time here because he's so committed to his game and didn't want to miss any workouts or anything, that's his top priority," said Simon. "He's very, very focused on his senior year."

The four-star prospect has gotten off to a good start this season for Findlay.

"We're really happy with Winston; he's doing great," said Simon. "He plays several positions for us and has been very good defensively. It's early but he's averaging about 15 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists for us right now. He's been very good for us."
