Matthews working on grades and game

Several schools are close to extending an offer to four-star class of 2013 guard E.C. Matthews.

The season is set to begin for four-star guard E.C. Matthews out of Romulus (Mich.) High School in suburban Detroit. The 6-foot-3 combo guard excels at getting to the rim off the dribble, and schools are taking notice of the work he is putting in.

As always there are high hopes at Romulus High School and Matthews is a big reason for them. With the season approaching, Matthews has been working hard to get ready.

"Our first game is (Tuesday)," said Matthews. "I have just been staying late in the gym and coming early as well just to get ready for the game. That is all I can think about right now is the start of the season."

In order to take his game to the next level, Matthews has been working hard in a few areas to become a more well rounded player.

"I have been working on my jump shot and expanding my range," said Matthews. "Also I am trying to get stronger and tighten up my handle. I am long and I dribble a little bit wide, so I am working on getting that tighter."

When it comes to recruiting, several schools have remained involved with the No. 52 ranked prospect.

"Xavier is on the border of offering me a scholarship but they have to see my grades," said Matthews. "Penn State came in, Nebraska called me, DePaul, USC, Michigan, Arizona and some more that I can't think of."

The Blue Demons are known for their pressing style of defense and up tempo play, and that is something that appeals to Matthews.

"They have just been on me to stay up with my grades and everything," explained Matthews. "I really like DePaul's style of play. They run a lot and that is where I am at my best. They keep telling me if I improve my grades that they will also offer me."

Matthews made a recent visit to Xavier, and came away impressed with what he saw.

"I really like Xavier," said Matthews. "They just told me when I went down there for their exhibition game that if I improve my grades that they will offer me. I am just getting ready for that."

When it comes to picking a school, Matthews has a few criteria in mind that will help him make a decision.

"My mom and I are both big on my education," Matthews explained. "I am looking for a school that will give me individual attention on and off the court."
