"Big C" Is Headed To Big East

One of the big timers of the high school basketball season has closed down his recruitment. Charlie Villanueva, a Top 10 player in his class and early entrant into the NBA draft, has reached a decision.

Charlie Villanueva, should he take his name out of the NBA Draft, will play at Connecticut.

On Sunday, Villanueva decided to commit to the Huskies.

Since declaring for the draft, Villanueva took an official visit to Kansas and an unofficial visit to Connecticut. It was the proximity to home that did it for the Huskies.

"He said at the end, after he talked to his family, he felt that he needed to be closer to his family," Charlie's AAU coach, Gary Charles, said. "It was an opportunity to play close to home and for them to have a chance to see him play."

But, there's still more to the story. Right now, Villanueva is still a candidate to go directly to the NBA. He has until June 19th to decide whether or not to leave his name in the draft. Right now he's down in Florida working out.

"Charlie still wants to go to the NBA but we agreed that he needs to put this behind him so he can concentrate on the NBA," Charles sad.

If UConn can weather the NBA storm, then the Huskies would have one helluva late signee.
