Watkins adding offers

Isaiah Watkins is an excellent student and a high level basketball player. Now the St. Benedict's power forward is getting serious recruiting attention.

For Newark (NJ) St. Benedict's, one of their keys is the interior play of Isaiah Watkins. The 6-foot-8 native Canadian provides a physical presence down low, and now he is picking up offers and interest from all over the country.

At the Hoop Group Tip Off, Watkins had a pair of solid games for St. Benedict's. He showed the ability to finish around the rim to go along with being a solid rebounder. In his first year at the school, Watkins says things are going well.

"Everything at St. Benedict's has been great," said Watkins. "Coming from Canada and playing in the states I have learned a lot and it has been a great experience."

For Watkins the biggest adjustment hasn't been on the floor, instead it has been getting used to the American culture off of the court.

"I think the living life is very different," Watkins explained. "You have to get used to everything outside of basketball and just the American style of life. The basketball is just basketball it is what you love doing. The game is elevated and you have to get ready for that, but it is the other stuff."

Even with the adjustment, Watkins has had some solid performances and is attracting interest from schools all over the country, including some of the top academic institutions.

"I have offers from Arkansas and Baylor, and then I am also talking to Harvard, Stanford, Penn, West Virginia, Iowa State, Elon, Santa Clara, St. Bonaventure, Missouri, and some others," noted Watkins.

As a very good student, it is no surprise that Watkins has interest from many of the top academic schools around, and he says academics has been engrained in him by his parents for a long time.

"Both of my parents are teachers so they have stressed to me that if you don't make it in the classroom you won't get a chance to succeed on the court," said Watkins. "That has always kept me motivated and helped me strive to do my best both on and off the court."

Currently Watkins is in no hurry to select a college. He is taking a thoughtful approach to things where he wants to see what every school has to offer before coming to a decision. Still Watkins knows some factors are going to be important to him when the time does come for a commitment.

"I just want to go to a place where the coach cares about his players and also I want to go to a school that is competitive and plays in the NCAA Tournament," noted Watkins.
