Matt McKinney, 6-8 PF Santa Ynez (Calif.) High, is going to have some interesting decisions to make after this summer. In addition to being one of the best PFs in the west, Matt is also rated as the #1 volleyball player in the country. So while he will be considering the basketball programs, and what level he wants to play at, Matt will also be looking at volleyball programs.
Matt played extremely well in a brief appearance at the first session of the West Coast All Star Camp and removed any doubt that we had about his ability to play at the high major level.
We asked him which schools have been calling lately and Matt said, "Most of the Pac-10. UCLA, USC, ASU, Oregon, UC Santa Barbara, Vanderbilt and Irvine." When we asked which schools have been showing the most interest, Matt replied, "Definitely UCSB."
So how is he going to make his decision? "I'm going to wait until the end of summer and see how well I play," Matt said. "I'm not sure I want to play both sports. If I prove to myself that I can play at a high level in basketball, then that will mean a lot. But it doesn't necessarily mean I'll go play at the highest level -- it would just be something to consider."
Following the camp, Matt left to play twelve days of volleyball with an elite national team. After that, he will be playing with the Pump N Run team at the Big Time in Las Vegas.
