Gathers makes pick for Baylor

Ricardo Gathers, a four-star prospect, popped on Monday for Scott Drew and the Baylor Bears. He's their fourth pledge of the 2012 class.

Baylor added a big piece to their 2012 recruiting class.

Ricardo Gathers, one of the top available prospect, gave Scott Drew and his staff a verbal pledge Monday evening. Greg Gathers -- Ricardo's brother -- confirmed the news.

"Ricardo has always wanted to play and have a chance of winning a national championship and I think Baylor fits that," Gathers' brother told Scout.com.

According to Gathers, Baylor's current recruiting class factored into the decision making.

"He has a connection with Isaiah Austin and L.J. Rose," he said. "He's been playing with them and against them since he was 12 or 13 years old."

"They have a great point guard and a great big man and I just think that it's going to be a great fit for him."

Gathers, who was once a St. John's commit, also considered rejoining the Red Storm and looked strongly at Kentucky, North Carolina State, LSU Duke and others. In the end, it was Baylor that looked the most appealing.

"[Ricardo] fits into the Charles Barkley and Karl Malone mode and he can get in there and rebound but at the same time he can be a pick and pop four man," Ricardo's brother said. I just think he gives Baylor what they need to compete on the national level."

"Coach Drew has been there all along," he added. "He's been recruiting Ricardo since hew as in 8th grade."

To go with Austin and Rose, Baylor also holds a commitment from three-star big man Chad Rykhoek.

Gathers is ranked No. 42 overall in the 2012 recruiting class.
