Matthews continuing to work hard

For four-star guard E.C. Matthews his junior season has been a good one and recruiting is picking up.

Four-star guard E.C. Matthews is having an excellent year for Romulus (Mich.) Senior. The 6-foot-3 guard has his team playing some of its best basketball late in the season, and recruiting attention continues to pick up for him.

"It is going real good right now," said Matthews of the season. "We just came back from play La Lumiere with Hanner Perea and we played real well. I think we are playing our best right now."

Individually Matthews is well aware of what he needs to work on. The knock on Matthews has always been his inability to shoot the ball, but he says he is working hard on that and things are getting better.

"My shot has been getting better," explained Matthews. "I have been working hard in the gym on my shot. I have been playing at a pretty high level I think, so things have been going good."

Recruiting wise there are several schools working hard to stay strong in the picture with him.

"USC was at our most recent game," said Matthews. "Also I have been talking to Virginia, Xavier, DePaul, Michigan, and Dayton. Those are the main schools right now."

The USC Trojans have been on Matthews for a little while, and he says they have made an impression on him.

"I don't know too much about USC, but it was good to see them in the stands," said Matthews. "They have some good players in the program and I like the way they play."

One school much closer to home interested in Matthews is Michigan. The Wolverines already are short on numbers in the 2013 class, but Matthews remains on their radar.

"Michigan just tells me to stay on top of things grade wise," said Matthews. "They have seen me play a few times, but they just talk to me mostly about my grades."

Another school very interested in Matthews is Xavier. The Musketeers have been up to see him this season, and have remained in close contact.

"They have been watching me play for a while," Matthews said of Xavier. "They saw me last summer and a little bit this season. I know if I work on my grades the sky would be the limit and they say they would offer me."

For now Matthews is in no hurry to make his decision, but he does know what he will be looking for in a school.

"I am looking for a school with smaller classes and with good tutors where I know I will get my degree," explained Matthews. "Basketball wise I am looking for a school where I could play either guard position and where the coaches let their players play."
