Mitchell picks the Terps

Maryland added another piece to their 2012 recruiting class. This time Mark Turgeon went south and pulled Charles Mitchell out of Georgia.

Charles Mitchell had an itch Wednesday night.

"He called me last night at 11:00 and told me he knew where he wanted to go," Sandra Glass, Mitchell's travel team coach, told Scout.com.

This morning, Mitchell, a 6-foot-7 post prospect, made it official, verbally committing to Mark Turgeon and his staff at Maryland.

"He just put the phone call in five minutes ago," Glass said.

The visit played a major role in his decision, as did Maryland assistant coach Bino Ranson.

"To me what made him say Maryland, when he was up there he said he had a great rapport with the academic advisor," Glass said. "Coach Bino [Ranson], from all the schools he's been at from James Madison, to Xavier and to Maryland, was still recruiting him."

"He's built a great rapport with Charles, having recruited him throughout all of these years," she added.

Glass said Charles, who also considered Seton Hall, Cincinnati, Florida State, Georgia and Tennessee, said he liked the rabid fan base as well.

"He loves the fan base," Glass said. "Charles went behind the scenes and looked at a lot of stuff. They told him they have 14 to 16,000 at games. He went and checked that out. I think the fan base played a big role as well."

Mitchell is Maryland's fifth commitment for the 2012 class. The three-star prospect joins four-star prospects Shaquille Cleare and Jake Layman, as well as local standouts Seth Allen and Damonte Dodd.
