Eric Flato hasn't been to many high-profile events, but that hasn't stopped coaches from the Big West, Mountain West, Ivy League and WCC from recruiting him...

Eric Flato, 6-1 JR PG Piedmont (Calif.) High, told us yesterday that he has a top five of USF, Oregon St., Utah, Santa Clara and Yale.

When we asked Flato if any schools were stronger than the others with him at this point, he replied, "Santa Clara and Yale are pretty strong."

In addition, Flato is hearing from Pacific and St. Mary's -- both schools sent coaches to Flato's high school during the contact period.

Flato was at the USF team camp recently and had a chance to talk with the coaching staff. He said he's also been talking with the Oregon St. staff as well.

Flato has been to St. Mary's on an unofficial visit, but hasn't set up any official visits with the schools on his list.

We asked Flato about the issues that would be important when he chooses a school and he said, "the coaching staff and academics -- those will be the two most important factors."

When asked about early playing time, Flato said, "there will always be people at your position, but some early time as a freshman would be nice."

Flato doesn't anticipate making a decision soon. "I want to take my time," said Flato. "It's possible I could wait until the spring."

Flato told us that he has a 3.7 GPA and scored 1270 on the SAT.
