Burditt, Cal Part Ways

This doesn't happen everyday. At about 7:50 p.m. ET on Friday, I received a call from a woman who declined to identify herself. She asked if I was Dave Telep, I told her I was and she told me to call Derek Burditt at 8:30 my time and that he was de-committing to California. So, at 8:30 I made the call.

Bizarre Saga Takes Another Twist

In somewhat of a surprise, LA SF Derek Burditt de-committed to California. The 6-6 SF from Marrero (LA) John Ehret committed to the Bears in the spring. If you remember, there was some confusion when he made the announcement and now apparently he's had a change of heart.

Last week, Burditt made the all-star game at ABCD Camp and tallied 8 points in the contest. However, since then, he's told California that he's no longer committed to the Bears.

"You could say I'm de-committing," Burditt said. "I talked to one of the assistants and told them that. He was telling me to think about it. It's a done deal; I'm not going to Cal.

"When I was at the NBA Camp in D.C., and I had time to think about it to myself. I thought about how it would be to leave home. I wouldn't feel right about going away to California to play ball."

Last Friday, I received a telephone call from a woman refusing to identify herself. She instructed me to call Burditt at 8:30 my time because he would have some news for me. She said that he was de-committing to California. Of course, I called Burditt but was not able to reach him on Friday, Saturday or Sunday. I finally caught up with him Monday afternoon and he shared the story about parting ways with Cal.

"Right now, I'm just trying to get my grades straight and whatever happens happens. I don't know who is still looking at me. I don't really know what is going on."

Burditt did say that he has interest in Tulane, LSU, Georgia Tech, Tennessee, Memphis, Oklahoma and Texas.
