After taking a number of trips to Creighton, Hegner, a 6-foot-9, 200-pound big man, wanted to take one last trip to make sure.
"I've been there six or seven times," Hegner said. "Then I came and did their team camp to see it one last time to see if it was the place. I had that feeling that I just couldn't describe and then I came home and talked to my parents and I told them I'd call them on Monday."
Hegner, a standout at Berlin (Wisc.) High, gave Creighton the official word Monday evening. He cited their coaching staff and fan base among the reasons he opted for Creighton.
"The coaching staff was a big part," he said. "The offense and the fan base and them being 6th in the nation for average fans. The offense in general, the coaching staff and the school in general were all great things."
"It's great to have the process over," Hegner said. "I didn't feel like I rushed it."
"It felt right," he added. "When it feels right shoot the trigger."
Hegner, a three-star prospect, runs with the Wisconsin Playmakers on the travel team circuit.
