Newkirk recaps Georgia Tech visit

Josh Newkirk traveled to Atlanta for an unofficial visit at Georgia Tech. What were his overall impressions? He talked to Scout.com about the visit.

Josh Newkirk took an important visit this past weekend.

The highly regarded guard out of Raleigh (N.C.) Word of God traveled to Atlanta to check out Georgia Tech's campus and meet with their coaching staff.

"It was real good," Newkirk said of the visit. "Me and my mom and my dad went. They showed us the whole campus. We got to see the student center, café, the classrooms and the new stadium."

"It was a good visit," Newkirk said when asked about his overall impressions of the trip. "I got a good feel for how Georgia Tech feels about me and how I fit in."

During the visit, Newkirk, a 6-foot guard, met with Georgia Tech head coach Brian Gregory. His personality was among the things that stood out to Newkirk.

"Coach Gregory, he's a good dude," the four-star guard told Scout.com. "I like his personality. He's just a good coach. He kept it straight up with me. He's a good guy."

Two weeks ago the Yellow Jackets scored a commitment from Solomon Poole, a top 50 point guard and the brother of current Georgia Tech player Stacey Poole. Despite having one lead guard on board, the Yellow Jackets want to bring in another.

"They plan on playing both of us together," Newkirk said.

Newkirk currently has scholarship offers from North Carolina State, Georgia Tech, Oklahoma State and Tennessee. Xavier and Virginia Tech are also showing interest in the No. 72 overall prospect in the 2013 class.

"I'm pretty open right now," Newkirk said.

Although he doesn't have any exact dates, Newkirk told Scout.com that he wants to take future visits to Xavier and Tennessee, before knocking out a decision in the fall.

Newkirk will spend the month of July playing with D-One Sports. In July, he will participate in the Reebok Breakout Camp, as well as the Reebok Showdown Series, Peach State and Fab 48.
