Spain Has Top Three

Kyle Spain, a 6-5 junior small forward from Newark (Calif.) Memorial, figures to draw heavy interest at the high major level. Three schools stand out for him at the moment...

Kyle Spain, 6-5 JR SF Newark (Calif.) Memorial, is one of the elite wings in the West Coast class of 2005.

We spoke with Spain yesterday and asked which schools hold the most interest for him at this time. "Cal, USC and UCLA," said Spain.

When asked if he wants to stay in the west, Spain replied, "I plan to stay in the west, but if there are better schools in the east, I'm open to that."

Spain said Kansas and Arizona were his dream schools growing up.

We questioned Spain about the factors that would influence his choice and he said, "The people they have there -- how they take care of you, with tutors, and the environment. I don't like real cold weather."

Spain went on to say, "playing time is not a real big deal."

Spain has been on unofficial visits to Cal, USC, UCLA and Loyola Marymount.

We asked about the timing of his decision and Spain replied, "I want to get it done early, so I don't have to play all summer trying to impress coaches -- give my body a chance to rest. I think I'll decide before next summer."

Spain told us that he currently has a B average.
