Winthrop lands PG

Winthrop got on the board with a 2013 commitment from a jet quick point guard

First year Winthrop Head Coach Pat Kelsey has gone back to his Ohio roots for his first commitment in the 2013 class. Mansfield (OH) Senior point guard Keon Johnson decided to end his recruitment and pick the school.

Johnson, who stands 5-foot-6, is one of the quickest players in the country. With the basketball he can get from baseline-to-baseline in a hurry, and isn't afraid to get into the lane and make plays despite his size.

The toughness leader for All-Ohio Red all summer long, Johnson was very important to the All-Ohio success.

"He's verbally committed to Winthrop," said Mansfield Senior head coach J.T. Reese.

According to Reese head coach Pat Kelsey and assistant coach Brian Thornton did an excellent job of making Johnson feel wanted.

"They loved Keon," explained Reese. "He's not the biggest guy in the world, so when a coach loves as much as they do, and you are a small guard you have to love that. I think that is what set them apart. Also Coach Kelsey's work with top notch guards in the past played a part."

This is a solid addition for Winthrop, and Johnson should be able to come in right away and contribute.
