The first visit that the Towns family made was to North Carolina. The Tar Heels have been active recruiting Towns, and the family itself has some ties to one of the players.
"Carolina was very nice," said Karl Towns Sr. "Everything was good. The coaches showed us around and I was happy to meet Roy Williams. We had a nice tour of the campus, everything was beautiful, and we had a chance to talk to the players and get their perspective."
He continued, "I had a chance to talk to one of my old AAU players, Dexter Strickland, who has known Karl since he was four. He told us about the place, and we got to see the jerseys of all of the pros who went to the school."
"You know it was just a great time to get to know the program and to see what they bring to the table," he said. "It was very nice."
There was some speculation that the Tar Heels offered Towns a scholarship, but his father says that simply isn't the case.
"We didn't have any conversation about an offer," said Towns Sr. "Whatever people are saying about that isn't true. Will he get one, I can't answer that. More than likely I think he will, but we didn't get into that. In so many words they told me they really love the kid and they feel the kid can be a part of their program."
After visiting Chapel Hill, the family made the trip to North Carolina State where they were very impressed with Coach Mark Gottfried and his program.
"Red and white! Coach Gottfried and his staff are doing a great job of building what I presume will be a nice and successful program," said Towns. "They made it to the NCAA Tournament his first year there, and they told us they love everything about Karl."
The trip resulted in a scholarship offer, and it was one that was received quite well by Towns and the family.
"They came right out and said, ‘we want the kid'," Towns Sr. explained. "They offered Karl a scholarship and he was very, very grateful. I think that they see down the road that he could help them elevate to their status."
The final stop on the three school trip was Duke. As would be expected, the Towns family was very impressed with what they saw in Durham.
"Duke is one of the best and most well run programs we have seen," he explained. "We had a chance to personally talk to Coach K and congratulate him on his gold medal and coaching the USA Olympic team. We just had a great talk. It was just a great, great visit."
One interesting thing is that Coach Krzyzewski has actually coached against Towns. When the Dominican Republic played Team USA in an Olympic tune up, Krzyzewski was coaching against Towns. According to the elder Towns the two talked about their Olympic experiences.
"Coach K asked Karl about his Olympic experience, and Karl said it was one of the best experiences that he has ever had," said Towns Sr. "The fact that he had a chance to play against Coach K and the Olympic team, Karl told him it was a great experience to represent his mother's country and compete against the best."
He continued, "The best thing for Karl with Duke is they had a chance to see Karl play in a high level game. He proved that he could be out there and Coach K said that Karl showed well for himself out there."
When it comes to Baylor, Towns Sr. says that the family has come away very impressed with everything.
"Baylor, Coach (Jerome) Tang and those guys do a great job," he said. "Karl recently had a chance to talk to their players, and the Baylor program is a very good program with one of the best facilities in the country."
He continued about the Bears, "They run the type of motion offense where the bigs can be a major part of things. That is a very successful program and they have a lot to bring to the table. It is just a very good program that he likes a lot."
In terms of Kentucky, Towns played for John Calipari with the Dominican National Team, and now has to go from being a player for Calipari to being a potential recruit.
"The transition is one that Karl is making," said Towns Sr. "He loved the fact that he was a member of the Dominican National Team and that he played for Coach Cal, but I can't say for sure how he is transitioning from being one of the players playing for him to now being recruited by him."
Towns Sr. continued, "Coach Cal is a great coach and I think Karl benefitted from the experience of being able to play and learn what it takes to play at a great school like Kentucky."
For now the family is in no rush and is taking everything in and finding out as much about every school as they can. No timeline has been set in terms of a decision or other visits.
