Tigers snag key pledge

The Memphis Tigers landed another piece to a very strong 2013 recruiting class.

The Memphis Tigers were on the search for a high level point guard all July long, and their focus for a good part of it was on Rashawn Powell. The Orlando (Fla.) Dr. Phillips standout was a priority target, and on Saturday he made all the effort worth it.

As a four-star prospect at 6-foot-1, Powell has a unique ability to score off the dribble and from the perimeter. On top of that he has developed as a floor general, and that helped his game go to a new level while playing with the Showtime Ballers on the AAU circuit.

Initially Powell narrowed down his list to Memphis, Alabama, and Illinois. All three schools visited him in-home, but only one school could win out at that was Memphis.

Powell issued his commitment to the Memphis coaching staff on Saturday following a talk with his parents and AAU Coach Diana Neal.

By issuing his commitment, Powell is now the third pledge for the Tigers in the 2013 class. He joins five-star Nick King and three-star Markel Crawford to form one of the better classes in the country to date. King and Crawford are both Memphis natives, so this is the first out of state pledge for Josh Pastner and his coaching staff.

Currently Powell is the No. 84 prospect in the country and the No. 20 floor general.
