This summer the 6-foot-8 and 185 pound Owens ran with Baltimore's Finest on the AAU circuit and put together a solid campaign.
"I played well in Milwaukee and had a real good tournament there," said Owens. "For the summer I think I played pretty well. I averaged like a double-double with points and rebounds."
Given his athleticism and length, Owens has the versatility to play all over the floor.
"I am a diverse player," Owens explained. "I can go in the post or on the perimeter depending on who is guarding me."
Recruiting wise already one high-major school has offered, and several others have been in close contact.
The offer from South Florida was a big one for Owens and he was happy to get it.
"I was excited," said Owens of South Florida. "It was the first offer so that was nice. I don't know too much about them yet, but I know they are a good program that went to the NCAA Tournament."
Also the hometown Terrapins have had him on campus and are keeping a close eye on his progress.
"I've been inside the Comcast Center and it is real nice," he explained. "They are telling me they want to keep all of the best players home, and I like the campus a lot."
For now Owens is in no hurry to make a decision, but he does have a pretty good idea of what he is looking for in a school.
"I am looking for a good program with a smaller student body but a big time basketball program," said Owens.
