Young gives UK third top 10 recruit

James Young made it official on Thursday. The top 10 prospect out of Michigan committed to John Calipari and Kentucky.

John Calipari and Kentucky continue to dominate the recruiting landscape.

Thursday evening James Young,'s No. 9 prospect, offered up a pledge to the Wildcats, becoming the third top 10 recruit to commit to Kentucky in the 2013 recruiting class.

Young entertained interest from Michigan State, Kansas, Syracuse and others during his recruitment, but Kentucky has been the team to beat for quite some time. In fact, Kentucky is the only school that recently received a visit.

In the spring, Young called Kentucky his favorite and while his Godfather – Sean Mahone – backed off that talk the past two months, it was clear that the Wildcats were in strong position for the Rochester Hills (Mich.) High standout.

Following Young's unofficial trip to Kentucky, Mahone told that the visit was able to confirm everything they had heard about the University of Kentucky.

"They were able validate that everything we had heard from them verbally, they were able to back up on site on the official visit," Mahone said. "I wouldn't say they separated themselves, but yet we developed another layer of confidence in the quality of their program."

"Seeing is believing and we certainly have a lot of confidence in their program," he added.

With the addition of Young, Kentucky now holds four verbal commitments in the 2013 class. He joins Andrew and Aaron Harrison, both top three prospects, and three-star power forward Derek Willis.

But Kentucky's class isn't complete. They'll host four-star big man Marcus Lee for an official visit this weekend and also have scholarship offers out to Julius Randle, Tyler Roberson and Andrew Wiggins, who may or may not reclassify to the 2013 class.

Young is the 13th top 10 prospect to commit to John Calipari at Kentucky. The Wildcats have compiled the top recruiting class in the country the past four years and are currently No. 1 in the 2013 rankings.
