Recruitment picking up for Austin

Point guard Larry Austin is continuing to add offers as he heads toward his junior season.

For four-star point guard Larry Austin his recruitment is beginning to really pick up. After a very good summer running with the Derrick Rose All-Stars, Austin has added offers and coaches continue to roll through Springfield (Ill.) Lanphier.

For Austin, the No. 55 overall prospect in the 2014 class, his ability to attack the rim has never been in question, and now the according to his father the rest of his game is the focus going into the season.

"During open gyms he is working a lot on his jump shot," said Larry Austin Sr. "Larry can already get to the basket, but he is working hard on his jumper and his strength conditioning. Things are just going very well."

Recruiting wise Austin Sr, says things have picked up for his son and coaches are making their way to Lanphier quite a bit.

"It has been real good," said Austin Sr of his son's recruitment. "Basically every open gym coaches are in the gym. The first day of open gym DePaul showed up, also Stanford with Johnny Dawkins showed up, Illinois has been here, Harvard has been here, Stanford has been here, Kansas State, Memphis, Wake Forest, Oregon State, Oklahoma State, Iowa, Butler, Penn State has called, so things are picking up and have been really good for him."

Illinois recently extended an offer to Austin, and it is one the family clearly took notice of.

"The way we understand it is the interest has always been there," said Austin of Illinois. "For Illinois, we live in Illinois, that is our state school, to offer it is an honor. We have a relationship with Coach (John) Groce and his staff already and we had one ever since they got the job at Illinois."

When it comes to Stanford, Austin says the academics speak for themselves.

"It is phenomenal to hear from them," said Austin. "Any time you have Stanford or Harvard recruiting you that speaks volumes for your academics. I think it lets people know he isn't only an athlete, but he is a student as well. That's what we want people to know, he is a kid who gets the job done in the classroom and has what it takes to be successful not only on the court but in corporate America as well."

Aside from Illinois, the other in-state BCS school, DePaul, has also made Austin a priority recruit.

"It is going real good," explained Austin of DePaul's recruitment of his son. "They have a great staff and are doing a good job of recruiting Larry and clearly showing they are interested. Billy Garrett comes out quite a bit to check on Larry."

For now the family is content to be thorough with their process and not rush into anything. They are working to set visits, and right now one has been set up.

"We only have one unofficial planned because of making the calendar work out, and we will take that to Memphis in December," said Austin Sr.
