Lappas Gets Second Recruit

Massachusetts received a commitment from PG Mike Lasme in early July and now they've started August off on the right foot. TX PF Stephen Briggs is headed to Amherst. The Houston (TX) Westside product, committed last Friday.

UMass Lands Texas Big Man

UMass now has itself a pair of commitments. 6-8 PF Stephen Briggs gave Steve Lappas the thumbs up last week.

"I did some research on the school and who they'd be bringing in and if I would be able to play coming in my freshman year," Briggs said. "It's a good school academically and basketball-wise."

UMass assistant Chris Walker is a native of Houston so there's obviously some connection there. Briggs said he also considered Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Colorado State, Texas and Houston. He attended Westside High last year but spent half of the year at Alief Elsik prior to transferring.

Up Close With Briggs

Toughest Opponent: "It would have to be Robert Vaden (a 6-5 sophomore swingman committed to Purdue). Most of our guards couldn't guard him so we made a change."

Favorite Summer Moment: "I think I had the best time when I went to Vegas with Bracey Wright and Deron Williams."

Would Like To Play Against: "I'd most definitely like to play against UConn. A friend of mine, Emeka Okafor, is going there. I just want to get some payback on the losses."

Intended Major: Architecture.
