Enechionyia continues to add interest

It has been a big season for Obi Enechionyia who continues to pull in a lot of college interest.

Roughly a year ago Obi Enechionyia emerged on the national scene. Now the four-star recruit is one of the best players in the country. At Hagerstown (Md.) Saint James School, Enechionyia is having another big time year and more college attention continues to roll in.

At 6-foot-9 and 205 pounds, Enechionyia has the ability to be a very versatile forward who excels both inside and out. So far this season he is showing it, even if his team has had some struggles.

"We started off the season pretty slow," said Enechionyia. "I think I am playing pretty well. I am averaging like 22 points per game, but as a team we have started off pretty slow and that is a little disappointing."

He continued, "I am just working on my ball handling and getting to the basket off the dribble. Also my perimeter defense has been a focus, and I think I have gotten better in those two areas this year."

Recruiting wise numerous schools have made the trip to see him play and continue to stay in close contact.

"Maryland, Illinois, Georgetown, Villanova, Indiana and a lot of schools have come down to see me," he noted. "I would say the people that are the most interested are Maryland, Villanova, Ohio State, Xavier, Miami, and Temple."

The Maryland Terrapins have been a fixture in this recruitment, and continue to make Enechionyia a top priority.

"Coach (Mark) Turgeon is a great coach and they have a great future," Enechionyia explained. "Also I have taken a visit to the campus and they have great facilities and everything. All around it is a pretty good school."

Also recently the Illinois Fighting Illini have made sure to stay in contact with Enechionyia.

"They just got interested when the season started," said Enechionyia. "They haven't offered yet, but I have been talking to Coach (Jamall) Walker a lot and they say they are interested."

One of the first schools to offer Enechionyia was Xavier, and the Musketeers remain very active in the recruiting.

"I haven't had a chance to visit their campus, but I have been in touch with Coach Mike Pegues," Enechionyia explained of Xavier. "They think I can be versatile for them playing inside and outside and that I would fit in their system."

For now Enechionyia is taking things slow in his recruitment, but he hopes to at least get one visit in during the season.

"I haven't planned anything yet," he said. "I might take a visit to a school that is close like Temple, Villanova, or Maryland in the next few weeks though."

With no decision imminent, Enechionyia is just gathering all the information he can about every school, and seeing if they have what he is looking for in a program.

"I look for a coaching staff that I have a good relationship with," he explained. "That is a real big deal to me. Also I look at facilities, the campus, and of course the academic support is important. I also look for a place where I could play inside and outside and show my entire skillset."

Currently Enechionyia is ranked as the No. 54 player overall and the No. 11 power forward.
